Goodyear Tires was founded by 38 year old Frank A. Seiberling and its first home was a strawboard factory on the banks of the Little Cuyahoga River in East Akron, Ohio. The company got its start manufacturing of horseshoe pads, bicycle and carriage tires, sealing rings for canning, firehose and even rubber poker chips. Frank A. Seiberling purchased the company with his brother-in-law’s money. The rubber and cotton that were the life blood of the industry had to be transported from halfway around the world to a landlocked town that had only limited rail transportation. The company’s name memorialized Charles Goodyear as a courageous man who discovered vulcanization. Today, Goodyear measures sales of nearly $20 billion, although it took 53 years before the company reached its first billion dollar milestone to become one of America’s leading manufacturers of passenger tires. It all began in a converted strawboard factory on the banks of the Little Cuyahoga River in East Akron, Ohio. Spanning the years through all of those yesterdays, a legion of firsts reveal themselves in facts and figures to reflect the making of a premier company.

The Winged Foot

The winged foot trademark was first used in advertising by Goodyear in 1900. It was inspired by the ancient Roman god, Mercury. Mercury was the god of trade and commerce, but he was best known as the messenger of the gods because of his swiftness of foot. Speed was something Goodyear wanted to convey as a trademark quality. As a result, the present winged foot trademark emerged from prepared sketches.
